SUMMARY:New Year's Eve with Mike Munson
DESCRIPTION:Munson’s song writing leaves much to interpretation and strongly invites Midwestern toe-tappers to get out on the dance floor. He brings dark themes and heavy rhythms to his work\, echoing the traditional country blues that provide the undercurrent of his creativity. Having recorded at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia\, Mississippi and been mentored by Grammy nominee Jimmy “Duck” Holmes\, Munson has come face to face with the living history of the music of the delta. Munson’s sound is marked by a reverence for this historic southern idiom\, which is laden with intricate finger picking and hypnotic rhythms. His playing highlights the similarities between blues\, American primitive guitar and early rock and roll.\nA few weeks ago\, Munson released the acoustic\, instrumental album “Perihelion Day” (Liatris Records) under the moniker upup/OVER as he continues to expand his creative playing field. Inspired by time and space and the distance between humans and nature\, upup/OVER explores big issues without letting words get in the way. \n$8 cover charge begins at 9pm and includes a shiny hat or noisemaker for every guest and a glass of bubbly at midnight. All money collected goes to Mike. Be sure to catch this show or you’ll have to wait until next year to hear Mike live. \nWant dinner and a show? Call 608 534 6898 for a reservation. Some rooms remain too!!

SUMMARY:Kris Delmhorst
DESCRIPTION:Kris Delmhorst is an American songwriter\, singer\, instrumentalist\, and producer. Over more than 25 years as an independent artist\, she has built a body of work characterized by a wide-ranging\, genre-agnostic curiosity and constant collaboration. In addition to nine critically acclaimed studio albums\, she’s written songs and score for films and TV\, contributed as a producer\, player\, and or/singer to other artists’ work\, and performed thousands of shows across the US and Europe. Kris Delmhorst lives in western Massachusetts with her husband\, the songwriter Jeffrey Foucault\, and their daughter. Her latest album ‘Ghosts in the Garden’ will be released March 7th. She’ll be sharing a mix of new and familiar tunes. We are limited to 50 seated tickets ($20) that are sold only through Eventbrite.Soup\, salad\, walnut balls and dessert are served until showtime. No food is served in the performance area.Bar and food starts at 4pm. Seats may be claimed from 6pm. Show starts at 7pm.\nKRIS DELMHORST – GHOSTS IN THE GARDEN (2025)Ghosts in the Garden\, the gorgeous and searching new album from Kris Delmhorst\, is a layered\, kaleidoscopic meditation on grief\, loss\, and fate. Inhabiting the songs are a host of vivid spirits made tangible: the departed and the disappeared\, sins and their consequences; lost loves\, missed chances\, and the invisible sorrows that accompany us all. With richly observed details and finely calibrated emotional range\, Delmhorst finds the wavelength that illuminates these multitudes. Having summoned them\, she doesn’t avert her eyes from her ghosts – or ours – but invites them into an expansive conversation about the ways we’re shaped by loss and woven together by unseen threads of love.\nWorking at Great North Sound Society\, a studio built into an 18th-century Maine farmhouse that no doubt harbors ghosts of its own\, Delmhorst tracked live with a core band of Ray Rizzo on drums\, Jeremy Moses Curtis on bass\, and Erik Koskinen on guitars. Engineer Sam Kassirer added keys\, and Rich Hinman contributed pedal steel. An illustrious procession of guest vocalists – Anaïs Mitchell\, Rose Cousins\, Anna Tivel\, Ana Egge\, Taylor Ashton\, Rachel Baiman\, Jabe Beyer\, and Jeffrey Foucault – brings prismatic brilliance to the tracks\, refracting the individual slant of each song’s light.\nThe stories on this record unfold from the inside out like fables\, sketching archetypical characters – a fisherman recalling details of a life tethered to the margins\, a soldier remembering the universe of a single day and night of love – and transforming them into proxies for our own hauntings. The darkly hypnotic “Wolves” reckons with the mortality of parents\, the ordinary and inevitable orphaning that we all face. “I see wolves / circling the fire / circling the fire with their yellow eyes\,” Delmhorst sings\, steadying and challenging us to meet death’s gaze with respect\, before posing the album’s central question: “Do you really love the story if you don’t love the end?”\nThe eponymous ghosts of the title track – who turn up not only in the garden but on the road and in the kitchen\, in songs and at the bar – recount a dear friend’s expansive last days\, departing the corporeal world surrounded by a houseful of loved ones\, music and stories\, unguarded tears and wild laughter. It’s a gathering of spirits\, the brief and holy moment when the door between worlds is open\, and it is from this place that the album’s journey unfolds.\nSome elegies are more collective than personal: “Won’t Be Long\,” a jangly\, agitated rocker\, uses the queasy restlessness of the pandemic years to indict our blind impulse toward self-destructive greed\, while the gentle\, rolling groove of “Age of Innocence” delivers matter-of-fact reportage from a future ghost\, tallying the inevitable wages of our excess.\nFrom the weatherworn longing of “Lucky River\,” to “Something to Show” and its insomniac prayer for insight\, Ghosts in the Garden explores the hidden country of grief\, a land we all inhabit together but often navigate alone. Within this tender and urgent collection of songs\, Delmhorst offers a place in the wilderness to gather for solace and communion: “everyone’s here / no one’s gone.”\n“bold and brilliant” – Irish Times\n“literate and allusive” – Boston Globe\n“moody\, euphoric and transcendent” – LA Times\n“The garden is the now\, the living\, blooming present. The ghosts are many – all our dead and departed\, our lost loves and past mistakes and roads not taken\, and our possible futures too – crowding into the moment like they do. There’s a lot of grief in this record\, a lot of loss and change. Also abiding love\, quiet longing\, deep worry\, wild joy. I’m so grateful to all of the amazing people who are a part of it.” KD\n\nBuy Your Tickets Online Now!

SUMMARY:Luke Callan & Simon Cropp
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the banks of the Mississippi River at the Historic Trempealeau Hotel for an evening of song and dance featuring the driftless’ own Luke Callen and Simon Cropp – plainspoken songwriters and singers who lug around a couple dreadnaught guitars pickin’ on stories of love – loss – laughter and the funny places they take us in-between.\nLuke CallenIn an age of quick fixes\, flashing screens\, and pop ‘songs’ that are more formula than art\, an album that takes its sweet time is a radical act. “Also Going Nowhere”\, Luke Callen’s third full-length effort is just that – a collection of songs that spread out through time and space\, dripping with honest Midwest charm and a mischievous glint. It’s music that you can relax into\, paired with lyrics you’ll want to chew on and savor\, that ask something of their listener. These songs are proof and reminder: you don’t actually have to go anywhere at all to\, you know\, get somewhere.\nThat’s not to say the subject matters within this work are by any means easy or expected. Clementine follows a gun-totting mother up near the Taconite mines of Northern Minnesota. Deals go horribly wrong on the street corner in Lake Street Hustle. The cosmic\, primordial soup mixes with wildflower seeds in Some Reason. These epic tales swirl alongside summertime swimming holes\, interstate drives\, fishing trips with Dad\, and unlikely marriage proposals. All of it\, grounded and cohesive in the hands of a locked-in rhythm section (Chris Grey on drums and Lauren Anderson on bass) playful lead guitar (producer Erik Koskinen) the warm hum of an organ (Frankie Moscow)\, and of course\, Luke Callen’s confident finger-picking and weathered vocal delivery.\nThis no-frills arrangement style is like a drink of water for those of us who crave something real and honest to listen to. The sonic palette pays homage to a whole plethora of elements endemic to the American music tradition without feeling derivative or landing too hard on any one side of the genre question. Sure\, fans of John Prine\, The Band\, or Randy Newman will undoubtedly hear traces of Callen’s biggest influences\, but there’s a modern assessment within the music that is the distinct voice of an artist coming into his own and sharing stages with fellow pickers and balladeers like Charlie Parr and Margo Cilker.\n\nSimon CroppSimon Cropp is a flatpick guitarist and country and bluegrass songwriter. His performance style is equal parts dive bar bravado and fireside introspection. Simon’s songwriting style is plainspoken storytelling\, channeling classic country themes of love\, heartbreak\, and the landscapes he travels through.\nBoth as a solo act and with his band Slapdash Bluegrass\, Simon has had the chance to share the stage with songwriting inspirations in The Last Revel\, Possessed by Paul James\, Margo Cilker\, Clay Street Unit\, and Joseph Huber. With a dreadnought guitar in hand\, Simon’s flatpicking style blends country-inspired crosspicking with melodic sensibility to produce a sound that is as comfortable on a front porch as it is on a festival stage.\nThe hat will be passed. We ask for a minimum $6 cover per adult listener. All money collected goes to the artists. Thank you for your support of live music!

SUMMARY:Ben Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Ben takes over the porch and will fill hearts and souls with his glorious nature inspired compositions.\nABOUT THE ARTIST\nBen Cosgrove is a traveling composer\, pianist\, and multi-instrumentalist from northern New England. He performs regularly all over the country\, presenting a unique variety of original instrumental music that explores themes of landscape\, geography\, and environment while straddling a line between folk and classical music. His “electric and exhilarating” solo piano performances are at once dazzling and intimate: music that has been described as “stunning” and “compelling and powerful\,” — Red Line Roots has called him “stupidly talented” — all presented with “warmth\, humor\, honesty\, and the easy familiarity of a troubadour.”\nThroughout his career\, the strongest forces guiding Ben’s composition and performances have been his deep and abiding interests in landscape\, geography\, place\, and environment. For years\, he has been fascinated and inspired by the different ways people understand and interact with the landscapes around them\, and through songs with names like “Prairie Fire\,” “The Machine in the Garden\,” “Champlain\,” “Kennebec\,” “Volcano\,” and others\, he seeks to explore those relationships and reflect them in sound. “I don’t think of my pieces as rendering places in music\,” he once remarked during an interview with Harvard Magazine\, “but more just as a way of responding to places musically. Writing music just turns out to be a great way for me to process the world.”\nCosgrove’s new album Bearings\, represents the latest chapter in a career that to date has included solo performances in 49 states (all but Delaware)\, as well as artist residencies and collaborations with Acadia\, Isle Royale\, Glacier\, and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Parks\, White Mountain National Forest\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology\, Chulengo Expeditions\, the New England National Scenic Trail\, and NASA. To write the new record\, Cosgrove relied on a novel and improvisation-focused compositional style that aimed to reflect the real experience of learning topographical space through movement. “I’ve always been a bit obsessed with motion\,” writes Cosgrove in the liner notes\, “and I liked the idea of forcing myself to write a whole record on the move\, leaving no opportunity to overthink the songs before they had a chance to breathe. And conceptually\, there was something about having to find a song in the moment by moving around the piano — feeling out its contours like you might learn those of a landscape by walking across it — that felt important and true to the way I engage with the world in the rest of my life.” While this approach unifies the album\, the landscapes and ideas that inspire its songs range from Hawaiian volcanoes to Kansas skies\, and from Midwestern rail yards to the writings of landscape scholar J.B. Jackson.\nThe initial tracking for Bearings was completed on a Yamaha U3 piano with engineer Kevin Harper at Kleesounds in Nashville\, Tennessee. To build out the new music sonically\, Ben then returned to work with producer Dan Cardinal at Dimension Sound Studios in Boston\, with whom he had previously collaborated on 2021’s The Trouble With Wilderness.\nThe new songs further illuminate Cosgrove’s unique position as a musician suspended somewhere between genres: “I’m either a singer-songwriter who doesn’t sing\, or I’m a composer who behaves like a singer-songwriter\,” he has said\, and his chatty\, disarming stage presence would certainly make him seem more like a folk musician than a classical pianist. In addition to his solo instrumental work\, Cosgrove regularly tours\, records\, and collaborates with artists from across the worlds of folk\, rock\, and Americana music\, and while much of his music recalls the work of George Winston\, Keith Jarrett\, Nils Frahm\, or Ludovico Einaudi\, his years of experience operating in the worlds of folk\, pop\, and Americana/roots music are reflected in some of his songs’ more impassioned and percussive moments.\nThis is especially true of Cosgrove’s previous studio album\, 2021’s The Trouble With Wilderness\, a set of twelve lush and textured pieces that each considered moments of ambiguity and overlap between the built and natural environments. His most successful album to date\, Wilderness was featured as the subject of an episode of the NHPR show Outside/In\, was deemed one of the best new releases of spring 2021 by WBUR\, and was called “beautiful and fascinating” (The Maine Edge)\, “instant relief” (The Boston Globe)\, “deeply impressive” (Independent Clauses)\, and “immediately evocative and fully arresting… brim[ming] with technical mastery and emotional capital” (Seven Days).\nWilderness was preceded in turn by 2017′s Salt — “a breakup album about estuaries\,” as Ben has jokingly described it onstage — in which he explored feelings of ambiguity\, ungroundedness\, and loss by writing quiet\, shifting\, and intense music for piano and guitar inspired by salt marshes\, fault lines\, tidal rivers\, and other landscapes that exist in a constant state of flux. Seven Days called the album a “majestic entry into the composer’s catalog… replete with near-imperceptible embellishments and forward-thinking concepts\,” and Junction described it as “a poetry of tones and turns and motion and play that transcends everyday language… it’s a breakup album\, and it’s also a salve.”\nIn addition to his solo work\, Ben has performed and recorded with a wide variety of other artists from across the spectrums of folk\, classical\, jazz\, and rock music\, composed string and horn arrangements for other artists’ projects\, and he has contributed music to projects by clients including Florentine Films\, Grand Teton National Park\, Glacier National Park\, Katmai National Park & Preserve\, New Hampshire Public Radio\, Bristlecone Media\, the Conservation Media Group\, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. In 2016\, his piece “Carrying Capacity\,” a string work inspired by ecological data collected at Isle Royale National Park\, was premiered by Wild Shore New Music at their annual festival in Homer\, Alaska and then performed at Park Service sites in New York City and Washington\, DC. In 2022\, he joined forces with the New Hampshire writer Howard Mansfield to create and perform A Journey to the White Mountains in Words and Music\, a stage production combining Mansfield’s words with Cosgrove’s music\, which the two then performed in theaters around the state. Finally\, Ben has collaborated\, performed\, and recorded with a diverse array of other musicians that includes Max García Conover\, Steph Jenkins\, Darlingside\, GoldenOak\, Caroline Cotter\, Maya De Vitry\, Joel Thetford\, The Social Animals\, Town Meeting\, Kaiti Jones\, Avi Jacob\, David Berkeley\, Jamie Kallestad\, Palaver Strings\, Maine Youth Rock Orchestra\, and Ghost of Paul Revere.\nBen also writes short nonfiction\, and his essays about sound\, art\, landscape\, and place have been published by Orion\, Appalachia\, Northern Woodlands\, Taproot\, Literary North\, The Harvard Advocate\, The Island Review\, Maine Farms\, and land that i live. His essay “A Space Filled With Moving” was published as a chapbook by Literary North in 2019. He is a former Middlebury Fellow in Environmental Journalism\, in which capacity he researched and wrote about the relationship between sense of place and the conservation of natural soundscapes in national parks. Additionally\, Ben has been the Signet Society Artist-in-Residence at Harvard University\, a writing fellow at the Vermont Studio Center\, and a recipient of the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award. He sits on the board of the Northern Woodlands Education Center and has spoken about art\, environment\, ecology\, and place at primary schools\, colleges\, and universities\, at the annual meeting of the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences\, at the Northern Woodlands Annual Conference\, at the 2021 Maine Land Conservation Maine Land Conservation Conference\, at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Annual Summit\, at NASA’s 2023 Exploration Science Festival\, and at the 2017 Princeton Graduate Student Conference on Water and the Making of Place in North America. He also developed and teaches the workshops “Reflecting Place in Music” and “Music of the Landscape” most summers at the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology in Oregon.\nBen was artist-in-residence\, helping to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River National Fish and Wildlife Refuge through his music just this past year.\n$10 cash advance admission available at The Hotel during open hours from the bartender or hostess. $15 cash day of show. SUMMARY:Kelley Smith & Sarah Morris
DESCRIPTION:KELLEY SMITH BIO / QUOTES\nFolksinger-songwriter Kelley Smith is a hopeless romantic who fancies old poetry and grandpa sweaters. All at once whimsical and haunting\, Smith delivers deeply affecting lyrics with wry charm and a time traveler’s voice. Prone to melancholy and daydreaming\, Kelley spent her childhood roaming the woods of Minnesota and singing to forest animals. To this day\, her longing for that landscape runs deep and seems to find its way into her songs in one way or another.\nRaised by musicians\, Smith always had music in her bones\, but it wasn’t until she was 40 and a mother of four that her first record\, Moon Child (2022)\, came to be. As an insomniac\, she wrote this first batch of songs by moonlight. They evoke a sense of belonging\, juxtaposed with escapism\, as she croons about long-term love\, grief\, and her draw to the night sky. ”Her authentic\, rootsy sound\, falling somewhere between country\, folk\, bluegrass and old-time music\, is a pitch-perfect vehicle for the themes she explores…” – Adventures in Americana\nSince 2022\, Kelley has had the honor of sharing stages with folks like Charlie Parr\, Dave Simonett\, Alan Sparhawk\, Wild Horses\, Kelly Hunt\, Drew Peterson\, Stephen Wilson Jr.\, Molly Maher\, and more. Most often performing solo or as a duo\, Smith interprets old folk songs on guitar and banjo\, in addition to her original music.\n“Her ability to close the distance from the stage to your ears\, while portioning out strong emotions\, keeps you constantly leaning in more and more.”– TOM SMOUSE [Smouse In The House]\n”[Smith] has been making waves in the local folk and Americana scene. Her rustic sound\, combined with relatable gut-punchy lyrics has been resonating with audiences up north and beyond.”– SARAH O. [Southern Minn Scene]\n”In its truest form\, folk music requires us to slow down\, listen closely\, and let ourselves be absorbed by stories that take us to another place and time. And there might be no better example of that in the Minnesota music scene than Kelley Smith. These organic and unvarnished songs reflect life experiences that could as easily come from past lives as they could from Kelley’s soul.”– DAVID DENNISON [Rieder Homestead Concerts]\n“Kelley has performance sparkle that’s simply youthful. It belies innocence without being sugary…Kelley is similar in tradition to New Zealand’s marvelous Jenny Mitchell. Ladies who don’t adhere to the path of showboating yet exhibit extraordinary songwriting & performance skills.”– JOHN APICE (Americana Highways)\nSARAH MORRIS BIO / QUOTES\nSarah Morris has a habit of missing the forest. From the day the Minneapolis based singer-songwriter picked up a guitar\, armed with the bone-deep memory of her parents’ well-loved record collection and rooted in the storytelling fire of a Mary Chapin Carpenter tune\, she’s been too busy crafting love letters to the details of the trees. Sarah’s endearingly honest\, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture and get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia\, the rainy day ache in her sunlit voice granting us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own.\nA graduate of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music\, Sarah spent the first years of her career in Nashville\, losing herself in the art of writing timeless Americana melodies. “Sarah Morris [is] a bright\, clear\, brilliant songwriter\,” wrote Jon Hunt of L’Etoile Magazine. “…pure and crisp and perfect.” In the years since her 2011 debut album\, Lonely or Free\, Sarah’s career\, like her songs\, has been overflowing with delicious details. Her albums Ordinary Things (2015)\, Hearts in Need of Repair (2017)\, and All Mine (2020) recorded with band mates Thomas Nordlund\, Andrew Foreman\, and Lars-Erik Larson with producer Eric Blomquist\, earned international airplay and considerable critical acclaim\, reaching notable positions on both the Americana Music Association and Euro Americana charts. In 2016\, Sarah was a top four finalist in the NewSong Music Contest at Lincoln Center in New York City\, 2nd place winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition at MerleFest in Wilkesboro\, NC\, and an Americana semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. In 2018\, she went on to win the Kerrville New Folk Competition\, collecting an honorable mention at the Telluride Troubadour contest along the way. More recently\, Sarah was named Midwest Country Music Organization’s Songwriter of the Year for the third time.\nIn 2023\, Sarah released her 5th album of originals\, ‘Here’s To You’\, which was recently awarded ‘Album of the Year’ by the Midwest Country Music Organization.\nProduced by Dave Mehling\, Dave Franklin of The Big Takeover said of Here’s To You\,\n“It’s a triumph. An album of space and restraint\, any note played\, every word uttered feels perfectly and purposely placed. The album is a beautiful blend of groove and grace\, intimacy and entertainment\, fun\, and feeling. What more could you ask for? What indeed?”\n“Rootsy singer Sarah Morris offers a Norah Jones-like approach to Americana\, smoothing overs its rough edges with a butter-velvety voice and an intimate songwriting style.” Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune.\nThe hat will be passed. We ask for a minimum of $6 per adult listener. All money collected goes to the artists. Thank you for your support of live music!
