SUMMARY:Lou Shields
DESCRIPTION:Lou Shields continues the tradition of American music with a performance that pullsin styles of days-gone-by. On stage you will find him using 1931 National Resonator Guitars\, 1930s Arch Tops with D’Armond pickups played through a Fender PanoVerb amp. He accompanies this with a unique front porch style of foot percussion and sometimes a harmonica. Lou carries a full sound during live performances\, filling the room with emotion and an early acoustic and electric sound reminiscent of Golden Age Blues and Americana. All while sharing stories\, thoughts and experiences with the audience.\nLou developed a deep interest in music from a young age and taught himself to play guitar. By 18\, he was already playing with friends and forming a band. This was around the same time he was involved in a devastating woodworking accident that resulted in the partial loss of two fingers on his right hand and damage to two others. Despite the setback\, Lou quickly adapted to his new situation\, learning to play with his modified picking hand.\nSoon after\, Lou began exploring the roots of American music\, immersing himself in the rich musical history of the city. He frequented blues and jazz clubs in Chicago and traveled to Clarksdale\, MS\, and New Orleans\, LA\, to further deepen his understanding of the genres that shaped modern music.\nLou grew up in Chicago\, living downtown or in the South Suburbs his entire life. His father Lou Sr had an extensive 45rpm record collection filled with early Rock ‘n Roll. Lou spent hours and hours spinning these classics on an old HiFi set which began his life long love and journey learning about the roots of this music. He also had exposure to Maxwell Street in Chicago when he was young\, and those memories resonate with him much more now than when he first experienced this historical phenomenon—a place where goods\, both old and new\, were bought and sold\, where people from all walks of life collided\, and where the music he would eventually grow to love was performed on the street.\nWhile living in Chicago he owned an art gallery in Pilsen at 18th and Halsted St. Lou often creates his art from experiences on the road. He will take a picture of an old home in Mississippi and then draw it later or he takes inspiration from people and scenes in his wife’s early 20th century photo collection. He exhibits his art in Gallery shows or sells prints out of his merch box or at his wife’s vintage clothing store. In addition to being an artist\, Lou is also a Professor of Art at a college in the Chicago-area. He enjoys teaching his students about art and art history.\nIn 2015\, Lou purchased 15 acres of land and a salvaged wood cabin in the Driftless Region of Southwest Wisconsin (near Viroqua) where he set up an off-grid homestead. Lou loves working with wood and reclaimed materials due to his deep connection to the past. The homestead is filled with antiques he found on the road from stopping at roadside estate sales and thrift stores. In addition to the cabin\, Lou has built a screen porch\, tiny house\, an amazing reclaimed shed and other antique-styled outbuildings. Lou hired the Amish to build a barn on his homestead for woodworking and for community music gatherings. He also completed a log cabin in 2020 that was built on the high bluff with views of the Kickapoo River.\nLou enjoys playing his guitar on the porch of his Kickapoo River Valley Homestead while hanging out with his dog (Watson) or listening to music on the record player. Since he was young he has admired musicians such as Blind Willie McTell\, Son House\, Mississippi Fred McDowell\, Lead Belly\, Charley Patton\, Robert Johnson\, Mississippi John Hurt\, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Jimi Hendrix.\nIn addition to living in the Chicago-area and Viroqua\, Wisconsin he also lives in Madison\, WI with his Wife\, Stacey Roou and his teenage stepdaughters. Lou has no problem splitting his time between three areas – after all they are not that far apart and it gives him a balance of city and country life. Lou’s heart is on the road and he loves the ability to spend his time in different areas. Lou consistently tours throughout the United States and Europe in his camper van.The hat will be passed. DESCRIPTION:About Charlie ParrIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.”With a discography simultaneously transcendental in nature and grounded in roots music\, Charlie Parr is the humble master of the 21st century folk tradition. Parr started recording in Duluth in 2002\, where he lives today. Life in the port town on Lake Superior has a way of bleeding into his work the same way his childhood in Austin\, Minnesota does. Parr self-released his debut album\, Criminals and Sinners\, and did the same for his sophomore album 1922 (2002). With growing popularity abroad\, Parr signed with Red House Records in 2015\, where he recorded break-out albums Stumpjumper (2015) and Dog (2017). Parr’s music has an overwhelming sense of being present and mindful\, and his sound is timeless.Parr’s mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition of which Parr has dedicated his practice The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him\, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale\, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father. Parr strives to listen to everything: “I don’t see that I’d ever be capable of creating anything if it weren’t for these inspirations and influences\, books and music as well as the weather and random interactions with strangers and animals. So\, the well never runs dry as long as my eyes and ears are open\,” Parr said in a 2020 interview. Before he was even 10 years old Parr was rummaging through his father’s record collection—sometimes drawing dinosaurs on the vinyl sleeves—and listening to country\, folk\, and blues legends\, many of whom are staples in the Folkways catalog. When Parr sings and plays his resonator or 12-string\, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb\, Charley Patton\, Spinder John Koerner\, Rev. Gary Davis\, and Dock Boggs. This is especially true in his playing\, when\, after a diagnosis of focal dystonia\, Parr turned to greats like Davis\, Doc Watson\, and Booker White for two-finger picking inspiration. Gifted a 1965 Gibson B-45 12-string by his father\, Parr has never had a formal lesson and learned by to listening records and watching musicians he admired.Parr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature. Putting forth an ambitious and raw album that exemplifies the best of Parr’s sound: a blend of the blues and folk traditions he continues to carry with him and the steadfast originality of a poet.\nAbout Dead NorthDead North is a progressive bluegrass band from the northwoods of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. SUMMARY:Annie & the Oakies
DESCRIPTION:Although Annie and the Oakies is a relatively recent name in the southern Wisconsin bluegrass scene\, its roots run much deeper. All the members of A&TO were part of the Oak Street Ramblers\, a Madison favorite for nearly two decades. In 2022\, the band rebranded and released its eponymous debut album. Although Annie and the Oakies has a foundation based on classic bluegrass stylings\, its repertoire divulges a wider range of influences. Indeed\, the unexpected cover song reworked to fit a bluegrass lineup has become a staple of the band’s live performances.\nThe band consists of Annie Emmenegger on guitar and vocals\, Ian Alderman on mandolin\, dobro\, and vocals\, Jeff Kunkle on bass\, Mark Schlutt on banjo and vocals\, and Tina Thompson on fiddle. When not playing together\, all of the members are involved in side projects that allow them to explore the diversity of their musical DNA. Annie frequently performs solo gigs in the area. Mark and Ian are founding members of the up-and-coming bluegrass act Sorry Mountain. Tina\, an accomplished classical performer\, leads the Yahara String Quartet. Jeff plays electric bass in the regionally popular Cajun Strangers and the synth-rock band The Moonboot.Since its inception\, the band has played several high-profile shows\, including the Stoughton Opera House\, LarryFest\, multiple Madison festivals\, and a sold-out album release show at the North Street Cabaret. They have a monthly residency at the Harmony Bar and Grill in Madison\, performing every second Wednesday of the month. And\, most importantly\, every Thursday night is band practice in Jeff’s basement\, as has been the case for over twenty years.The hat will be passed.
